What is Yiddish art and can it still be practiced in contemporary Poland? Is the Yiddish language important for the diaspora, and especially for artists of the younger generation?

The co-founders of the Jidiszer Kunst-Institut (Jewish Art Institute) will participate in a discussion on Yiddish and its place in contemporary art:

Karolina Szymaniak – literary scholar, translator and editor. Expert in contemporary Yiddish literature. Founding member of the Polish Society for Yiddish Studies. Translator and editor of for instance the acclaimed book called Acacias Bloom by Debora Vogel and the latest publication of the Jewish Historical Institute entitled Hasidic Steam Engine.

Maria Sławek – lecturer and violinist, co-founder and president of Mieczysław Weinberg Institute, tirelessly working to popularise the work of this outstanding composer, as well as the originator and curator of Rywka Tiktiner Jewish Music Festival in Tykocin.

Damian Josef Neć – theatre director, playwright, video artist. Director of plays e.g. Der Szturem. Cwiszyn / Burza. Pomiędzy based on William Shakespeare’s works (nomination for the Golden Yorick) and Dus Buch fyn Gan Ejdn / Księgi Raju by Icyk Manger at the Jewish Theatre in Warsaw and Wiera Gran at Teatr Polski in Poznań.

The discussion will be hosted by Marek Tuszewicki, PhD, an outstanding researcher of Yiddish culture, translator and Yiddish poet, lecturer at the Institute of Jewish Studies of the Jagiellonian University.
