Parshas of Rabbi Ozjasz Thon reads Janusz Makuch (PL)

25.06.2025 - 18:15 / Ozjasz Thon Square, ul. Miodowa 24

Rabbi Abraham Ozjasz Thon (born 13th February 1870 in Lviv, died 11th November 1936 in Krakow ) was one of the most outstanding personages in the history of the great people of Kazimierz and Krakow. From 1897 until his death, he served as rabbi in the progressive Tempel synagogue, where he delivered his sermons in Polish! In the same year, together with Theodor Herzl, he organised the First Zionist Congress in Basel. He was a beautiful Zionist proclaiming love for the Land of Israel. And he was a beautiful Polish Jew striving for Polish-Jewish reconciliation.

In 1919, he was elected to The Sejm of the Second Polish Republic and he held the position of a member of parliament until his death. When he died, almost everyone in Krakow attended his funeral. In 1938, the first volume entitled  Writings. Vol. 1, Sermons (1895-1906) / Ozjasz Thon was published. In 2010, Krakow Austeria Publishing House re-edited the book.

The sermons collected in the book were delivered by Rabbi Thon in Tempel Synagogue. We will recall them. On the Square named after him, in front of Tempel Synagogue, each day of the Festival, invited guests and each of you who wishes to do it – will read aloud selected Sermons by Rabbi Thon.

Rabbi Ozjasz Thon seems painfully forgotten today. So let his words become “viral” in the space of the Jewish Town of Kazimierz and Rabbi Ozjasz Thon himself will return to be with us.
