Sh’ma: A Story of Survival (EN)

A multiple award winning* film on dance, “Sh’ma: A Story of Survival” tells a story of a Holocaust Survivor, who was also the mother of the film’s director. Through dance, music, and video the film depicts a personal perspective of violence and the human will to survive, resulting in a touching and universal experience. Featuring 15 unique dancers from Dance Theatre of Harlem,the Texas Ballet Theater, and others, and an original film score, “Sh’ma” connects the beauty of choreography with an emotional story which is loved by the audience regardless of the viewer’s age or ethnicity.

Dr. Suki John – a dance professor at Texas Christian University. Creator of “The Sh’ma Project” and choreographer of the film. Her mother, a Hungarian Jewish woman who survived the Holocaust, was an inspiration for the film. Dr. John was working as a choreographer in e.g. Cuba, Yugoslavia, and New York. She also wrote texts for “The New York Times”, “Dance Magazine”, Oxford University Press and Routledge. She is also the author of the book “Contemporary Dance in Cuba”.

*Suki John has won the prestigious Chita Rivera Award for Outstanding Choreography in a Feature Film for “Sh’ma: A Story of Survival.”
