Sugihara’s List: How a Japanese Man Saved Thousands of Polish Jews (PL)
27.06.2025 - 12:00 / Hillel Gimel Kraków Student Club, ul. Izaaka 5Chiune Sugihara, a Japanese diplomat, issued thousands of transit visas to Polish Jews in the summer of 1940, saving their lives and enabling them to escape the Shoah through Japan to other safe places around the world. This unique and still relatively unknown story told by Zofia Hartman, a researcher, and member of the Krakow’s Hillel community, shows how rescue came from the least expected place. This event will be a chance to take a look at Sugihara not only as a hero, but also a personality that still raises many questions today. It will also be a chance for young Jews who are activists in Kazimierz today to get to know the story with a universal message of bravery and solidarity.
